find_stock β€” Resolve any name to a ticker

The essential first step whenever you're not 100% sure of the exact MarketIV ticker β€” especially for non-US companies. MarketIV uses its own exchange suffixes (Korea = .KO not .KS, Taiwan = .TW, Japan = .JP), so guessing a foreign ticker typically 404s.

Accepts: company name, partial ticker, alias, ISIN, or a non-English name. Lexical matching runs first (exact symbol/prefix/alias), with semantic fallback so phrases and foreign names still resolve.

Also resolves:

  • Commodities: "gold" β†’ GOLD.COMM, "oil" β†’ WTI.COMM
  • Crypto: "bitcoin" β†’ BTC-USD.CC
  • Government bond yields: "US 10-year" β†’ US-10Y.GB
  • Money-market rates: "SOFR" β†’ SOFR.MM
  • Private companies: "OpenAI" β†’ oc:52, "SpaceX" β†’ their internal oc: id

Private company oc: ids can be passed to stock_impact to see their news history.

Batch mode

Pass queries=["Apple", "Samsung", "TSMC"] to resolve several names in one call. Each query returns a match_quality: strong (clear winner β€” auto-accept), weak (ambiguous β€” disambiguation recommended), or none.

:::caution Translate generic commodity/sector concepts to English first The resolver is English-canonical for generic concepts. Company proper names pass as-is:

  • ΰΈ—ΰΈΰΈ‡ΰΈ„ΰΈ³ β†’ "gold" βœ… (not the raw Thai)
  • θŒ…ε° β†’ resolves as-is βœ…
  • εŠε°Žδ½“ β†’ "semiconductors" βœ…
  • γƒˆγƒ¨γ‚Ώ β†’ resolves as-is βœ… :::

find_megatrend β€” Resolve a theme phrase to a node id

MarketIV's taxonomy has 25+ tier-1 theme families with hundreds of sub-nodes. This tool resolves natural-language terms to the exact node id(s) needed by screen_unified, brief, theme_players, write_note, and more.

Pass a list of terms β€” each gets its own ranked candidate list. You pick the best match and reuse the id.

Example resolutions:

InputResolves to
"EV"Electrification & Mobility (broad node)
"HBM"Memory β€” DRAM, NAND & HBM
"foundry"Foundry & Contract Manufacturing
"CRISPR"Gene & Cell Editing
"stablecoin"Stablecoin Issuers & Distribution
"GLP-1"Metabolic, Diabetes & Obesity
"AI agents"Agentic AI & Autonomous Workflows

:::tip Theme vs sector find_megatrend is for trend/theme concepts. For established industry names (banks, airlines, retail), use find_gics instead β€” those live in GICS, not the megatrend taxonomy. :::

find_gics β€” Resolve a sector name to a GICS code

The GICS tree is English-named. Pass the English industry word β€” returns candidate codes at multiple granularities.

InputReturns (examples)
"banks"4010 (Banking group), 401010 (Diversified Banks), 401020 (Regional Banks)
"semiconductors"4530 (group), 453010 (industry)
"biotech"352010
"airlines"203020
"retail"255010, 255020 (specialty/internet)

Pick the granularity you need, then pass the code to screen_unified, brief, screen_stocks, etc.

:::caution Translate sector names to English first ΰΈ˜ΰΈ™ΰΈ²ΰΈ„ΰΈ²ΰΈ£ β†’ "banks", εŠε°Žδ½“ β†’ "semiconductors", ιŠ€θ‘Œ β†’ "banks". :::

list_themes β€” Browse the megatrend taxonomy

Returns the full taxonomy tree β€” 25+ tier-1 families, each with sub-nodes. Useful for discovery ("what sub-themes exist under biotech?") or when you want to browse rather than search.

Pass an optional query to filter the tree by keyword.

theme_players β€” Listed companies in a theme

Returns the curated roster of investable, publicly listed member companies for a theme. Rolls up sub-themes β€” a parent node returns its children's members too.

This is the correct tool for "who are the players in X?" β€” not screen_stocks, which is a news-ranked subset. theme_players gives the full curated membership.

ParamDescription
themeName or node id (name is resolved automatically)
countryDefault all (full cross-market roster); ISO-2 to scope to one trading venue
exposureFilter to core exposure only (stricter membership)
limitDefault 20, max 50; large themes have many more

If total > count in the response, you're seeing a top slice β€” say so rather than implying it's the full list.

:::caution Listing venue, not home country country filters by where the stock trades, not the company's home country. A European aerospace company listed on the LSE appears under GB, not its home country β€” use all when in doubt. :::

private_movers β€” Private companies in a theme

Off-coverage (private/pre-IPO) companies whose news mapped into a theme. Returns the most news-active private companies in the theme, most mentioned first.

Each company has an internal oc:<id> identifier. Pass it to stock_impact(oc:id) to see the articles that mentioned them.

Useful for: "Which private AI companies are getting the most coverage?" or "What private players are competing in EV batteries?"

relationships β€” Competitors and peers

Returns two lists for a company:

  • Competitors β€” direct product/market competitors, ranked by competitive closeness
  • Peers β€” companies sharing the same megatrend exposure axes, grouped by theme

Example: relationships("NVDA.US") returns AMD, Intel as competitors; and themed peer groups for AI accelerators, data center, memory-adjacent names.

The response includes total for each list. For large themes, you're seeing a top slice β€” raise limit or say more exist.
